Osun NSCDC arrest two for alleged meter tampering, illegal electricity vending

Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has apprehended two suspects over alleged conspiracy, meter tampering and illegal electricity vending in Osun State.

The suspects, identified as Babatunde (46) and Akin (40), according to a statement by the command spokesperson, Kehinde Adeleke on Wednesday, were arrested following a complaint linked to fraudulent activities involving a prepaid electricity meter belonging to a customer of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

Providing the brief of the matter, the State Commandant, Igbalawole Sotiyo, disclosed that the case was reported after a customer observed that his prepaid meter developed a fault which prevented him from loading electricity recharge units.

He said Babatunde and Akin, a former staff member of IBEDC conspire to tamper with the prepaid metre.

The statement noted that Babatunde admitted that the meter was unlawfully formatted, and 200 units of electricity were made to reflect on the meter without payment.

Commandant Sotiyo warned electricians and other technical service providers against engaging in any form of meter tampering, illegal electricity vending or acts capable of sabotaging the nation’s critical infrastructure.

He emphasised that the Corps remains committed to protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, including power installations and will not hesitate to prosecute offenders.

He further assured members of the public that the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Command also urged residents to report suspicious activities relating to electricity meters and other public infrastructure to the nearest NSCDC office.
