Two families of the two people killed during the faceoff involving chairmen elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress and members of the Peoples Democratic Party over the control of local government areas in Iragbiji, Osun state, have demanded immediate prosecution of the five people arrested in connection with the crime.
The deceased, Segun Oloyede and Taiwo Oyebamiji, were allegedly shot dead by some hoodlums on February 17, 2025.
Addressing journalists in Aagba, Osun State, on Wednesday, Israel Oloyede, the father of the late Segun, said almost one year after the incident, the family was still waiting for justice.
Oloyede said his son, who left a wife and one child, was shot by a hoodlum, adding that he died before reaching the hospital.
He noted that after a series of petitions had been written to demand the arrest of those alleged to have carried out the killing, the police on Tuesday arrested five suspects in connection with the murder.
“What happened that day was that we heard that the governor wanted to come for a political rally to campaign for the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the Local Government election in Iragbiji, and my son, Segun Oloyede, and his friends went there to welcome him.
“It was at the point of waiting for the governor that some hoodlums started shooting. One particular man from Aagba was among the hoodlums, and he was the one who shot my son. My son was not the only person attacked. About 15 people were shot. However, two of those shot died on their way to the hospital.
“He was my only so,n and since he was killed, things have not been the same, and it has been almost a year now, but we have yet to get justice. The matter was reported at the state police command, but they did not do anything about it. But Zone XI Command Osogbo arrested five people on Tuesday in connection with the killing. But the prime suspect that shot my son is yet to be arrested,” he said.
A relation to the second victim, Mrs Adijat Popoola, said Taiwo’s death has since put the family he left behind in distress.
“Taiwo’s death has caused a lot of pain for us, and the only thing we are begging for is justice. We want everyone involved in the killing of Taiwo to be arrested and made to face justice. The government should also assist the families of the victims and ensure justice,” Popoola said.
The spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Zone XI, Ade Ogunyemi, when contacted, simply said “five people are in the custody regarding the case.”
