NANS honours Federal Poly, Ede council chair, rector for pardoning expelled students

The National Association of Nigerian Students, South West Zone, on Saturday, bestowed the honour of the patron of the body on the Chairman, Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State, Prof. Taiwo Olaiya.

The student body dressed Olaiya as the patron at the event held on the campus of the polytechnic in Ede.

The event heralded the pre-convention of the association held on the campus of the polytechnic.

The students’ body also honoured the Rector of the polytechnic, Dr Sani Man Yahaya, for accepting the plea to pardon the students expelled for their roles in a violent protest that erupted on the campus in May 2024, during which buildings and some cars were damaged.

NANS South West Coordinator, Taiwo Owolewa, while addressing the gathering, explained that students under his leadership are imbuing a better orientation of dialogue before protest.

Owolewa, who recalled how he contacted the Governing Council Chairman after the students who were identified as participants in the protest were expelled, commended Olaiya, saying his intervention was strategic towards resolving the crisis.

In his acceptance speech, Olaiya commended the Rector of the polytechnic for listening to his advice on the matter and lauded the student body for the honour bestowed on him.

He said, “No matter what, youth are expected to have a little bit of exuberance on their side, and I’m happy for the recent victory. That is the critical reason that the coordinator said they placed this honour over, and that is the fact that they recognise that the Rector is giving listening ears to the Council Chairman and other members of the council to improve the welfare of the students.

“We have also made it known to students at all times that even though we are not here to punish you, you should also know that your primary assignment is very important, and your parents are expecting so much. So, you should concentrate more on your primary assignment than on anything else that will lead you to trouble in school.”
