Osun 2026: Adeleke may dump PDP for APP

By Tunde Olamilekan

There are strong indications that Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, may dump the Peoples Democratic Party for the Action Peoples Party ahead of the August 08, 2026, election.

The move, according to sources was connected to the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party at the national level.

The PDP currently has two factions – one backed by the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and the other by the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The crisis has also cast doubt over the national convention of the party scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

The Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier stopped the planned national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Judge James Omotosho ruled that the planning for the national convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, between 15 and 16 November violated the Nigerian constitution, guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as well as the PDP constitution.

However, the Oyo State High Court in another ruling, granted the Peoples Democratic Party approval to proceed with its elective national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, the state capital.

The court also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to attend and monitor the exercise, Channels TV reports.

Delivering the ruling, Justice A. L. Akintola issued an interim order permitting the party to continue its convention plans without obstruction.

The ongoing drama in the party, according to sources might lead Adeleke and his supporters to the APP.

A source within the PDP who preferred anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue said Adeleke is also looking at the possibility of joining the African Democratic Congress, adding that the APP might be the last resort if the ADC did not work out.

The source noted that had the leadership of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State not blocked the incumbent Governor, Adeleke would have decamped to the party to pursue his re-election.

It would be recalled that Governor Ademola Adeleke, like many other first-term governors in Nigeria, attempted to move to the APC. However, while other governors were accepted into the ruling APC, the leadership of the party in Osun State, blocked the governor from joining.

The source said the fear was that Adeleke contesting under the PDP with the current situation might have long-term consequences.

According to the “Adeleke is weighing up his options, and one of the parties that he is thinking about is the Action Peoples Party. He will try to see if he can go to the African Democratic Congress, but if that does not work out, the APP might be his last resort.

“With the current issue happening at the national level, the situation has become tense, and it must be navigated very carefully. Had the All Progressives Congress in Osun State accepted him, things would have been better.

“If Adeleke stays and contests under the PDP, he might later face issues because there are two contending court judgments now, and we don’t even know who is who.

“The situation will be clearer in the coming days, but one thing I am sure of his that the likelihood of Governor Adeleke contesting under the PDP is getting slimmer every day.”
