OAU students lament increase violent off-campus robbery attacks

The Students’ Representative Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has lamented the continued violent robbery attacks on students staying at off-campus.

The students’ council made this known in a statement released on Tuesday and co-signed by its Speaker, Awe Ademola, Deputy Speaker Nasir Hameed, and Clerk Ayeni Deborah.

The students condemned what they described as “a climate of fear and uncertainty” across student communities in Ile-Ife, following a spate of violent robberies targeting students.

The statement, demanded better security to curb robbery attacks on students residing off-campus, particularly in Moremi Estate.

The students alleged that around 11 pm on Sunday at Oreoluwa Hostel in Moremi Estate, Ife, students were attacked, dispossessed of their valuables, and left injured.

“This is not an isolated event; it is a continuation of a frightening trend that has persisted for far too long while those responsible for protecting lives and property fold their arms in shameful silence,” the statement read.

The SRC also urged the university management to address the root cause by prioritising on-campus accommodation, noting that thousands of students are forced to live off-campus due to inadequate housing.

“The long-term solution lies in bringing more students back on campus.

“Safety cannot be guaranteed when thousands are left to fend for themselves outside,” the statement added.
