The Muslim Congress (TMC), Osun State, has appealed to the Nigerian government to grant full constitutional recognition to the Shari’ah legal system alongside the common law.
The group said the move would allow Muslims to be guided by their faith-based legal principles up to the Supreme Court level.
Amir Li Awal of TMC, Sheikh Abdulrazaq Abdulsalam, made the appeal during the organisation’s Annual State Lecture held in Osogbo to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
Sheikh Abdulsalam said Muslims in Nigeria should be allowed to freely choose Shari’ah law as a parallel legal option to the common law system.
“We want the Shari’ah to stand with the common law. Let people be free to make their choices. Give the Shari’ah the full length of power so that Muslims who want to be guided by it can do so easily,” he said.
