The Osun State Labour Movement has berated the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, accusing the party of attempting to gain relevance by maligning workers and pensioners.
In a joint statement signed by leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Joint Negotiation Council (JNC), the movement described APC as a party known for oppressing workers and granting promotions without financial backing.
The union leaders also condemned the allegation that the labour movement had been compromised as “an embarrassingly envious act.”
The statement noted that while in power, APC was known for “oppressing workers, granting promotions without financial backing, stagnating career progression, and denying pensioners their entitlements”.
The labour leaders argued that the APC is now envious because the current administration under Governor Ademola Adeleke is prioritising the welfare of workers.
“When a party known for anti-worker policies now sees another government doing better than them, they throw a fit of jealousy,” the statement read.
The statement queried the APC for failing to appoint permanent secretaries for more than eight years, only to make such appointments 48 hours before leaving office, while also neglecting 30 months’ salaries and pension entitlements.
“Do we call the correction of these wrongs within three years of this government a Greek gift, a poisoned chalice?” the statement asked.
The labour leaders further stressed that the APC has lost the people’s appeal and is now resorting to antagonising the labour movement to remain in the spotlight.
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Since APC Osun State Chapter has forgotten the past, the workforce, pensioners, and the labour movement are watching and will surely aid their remembrance so that the people of Osun will not be doomed to history repeating itself.”
