The Chairman of the World Institute for Peace, Mr Lamina Kamilu, has called for the investigation of one Alhaji Sikiru Lawal, who allegedly assaulted an employee of FedEx Nigeria, Mr. Jimoh Ayinde.
In a letter he personally signed and addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the activist said the victim was physically assaulted and detained on the order of Alhaji Lawal, who accused him of stealing.
The incident, according to Kamilu, happened in Osogbo, Osun State capital, on the 22nd of August, 2025, when Ayinde went to deliver a package to the accused person.
Kamilu stated that the victims narrated that after being tortured, he was taken to Ota-Efun Police Station, where he was allegedly unjustly detained by the police officers on duty without a fair or proper investigation.
He said, “We write to urgently draw your attention to a disturbing case of human rights violations, physical assault, and wrongful detention involving Mr. Jimoh Saheed Ayinde, an employee of FedEx Nigeria, which occurred in Osogbo, Osun State, on the 22nd of August, 2025.
“According to the victim’s account, while lawfully delivering a sealed package, Mr. Ayinde was falsely accused of theft by Alhaji Sikiru Wasiu Lawal.
“With the assistance of a vigilante officer and other accomplices, he was allegedly subjected to brutal physical assault, electric torture, unlawful detention, abduction to undisclosed locations, and other inhumane treatment that nearly cost him his life.
“Disturbingly, despite clear evidence of abuse, he was later taken to Ota-Efun Police Station, where he was unjustly detained by the police officers on duty without a fair or proper investigation.
“Particularly shocking is the fact that the package, which had been duly registered in Lagos and sent via FedEx to the Osogbo FedEx office, was different from what was found in the package when Alhaji Lawal himself opened the package in the presence of the victim and subsequently made unfounded allegations against the victim. This act alone raises significant concerns of criminal manipulation on the part of Alhaji Lawal.”
The activist urged the IGP to intervene and ensure that the culprits were brought to book.
He also appealed to Egbetokun to “Direct the officers handling the case to conduct their duties with the highest level of professionalism, impartiality, and transparency, so that justice is not only done but is clearly seen to be done.
“Take disciplinary action against any police officers who may have acted negligently or compromised their responsibilities by wrongfully detaining the victim.”
