LG Crisis: APC chairmen may seek tenure elongation

By Tunde Olamilekan

The Chairmen elected under the All Progressives Congress in the October 15, 2022, local government elections might seek a tenure elongation, after the three-year expiration of their term, osun.life gathered.

The chairmen elected under the immediate past administrator of former governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, according to sources, might approach the court to seek the tenure elongation to compensate for the period they were out of the council secretariats due to a judgement of a Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, which sacked them in 2022.

It would be recalled that the local government administration in the state is almost paralyzed due to the ongoing leadership tussle between the APC chairmen and those elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 22, 2025 election.

The crisis led to the killing of at least six people, including the APC council chairman for Irewole Local Government, Mr Remi Abass.

Also, the federal government has withheld the allocations meant for local governments in the state since February.

While the APC elected chairmen said the court had reinstated them and returned to the council secretariats across the state.

The PDP, however, held that the court did not rule in APC’s favour, and insisted that the chairmen elected in the February 22 election should be recognised.

Speaking with osun.life, one of the APC council chairmen who does not want to be mentioned because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, confirmed that they might seek a tenure elongation.

The APC chairman said his colleagues are already muting the idea, adding that it will be an injustice for them to leave office in two months, considering they were out of the council for more than two years.

“It’s true, we may likely seek a redress in court. We are to spend three years in office, but due to the court judgement that sacked us, which has been reversed by the appeal court, we’ve not even spent a year in office.

“Our people elected us and the mandate they gave us is three years, and we are looking for every legitimate means to spend those three years in office.

“We are already discussing it and we will come out to tell the public once we finalize on what we want to do, but for now, it’s still at the preliminary stage, but one thing is that every one of us is behind this,” the APC council chairman stated.
