The Chairman of the World Institute for Peace, Mr Lamina Kamilu, has called for the sanction of officers of the Prompt Response Unit (PRU), of the Osun State Police Command, over alleged persistent acts of brutality and extortion against residents of the state.
In a letter he personally signed and addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Kamilu bemoaned the extortion, adding that officers from the unit have continued the actions unabated for several months.
Tte activist alleged that some of the PRU officers on Friday, August 29, 2025, assaulted two boys who had just completed their secondary education.
According to him, the officers stopped the students by the road side and tagged them Yahoo boys, adding that the students were beaten after failing to offer any bribe.
The letter read in part, “I respectfully appeal to you to urgently caution and sanction the Prompt Response Unit (PRU) of the Osun State Police Command over their persistent acts of brutality and extortion against innocent and defenseless Nigerians. They thought they were Yahoo Boys. These unprofessional practices, which have continued unabated for several months, are unlawful and seriously damaging to the public image of the Nigeria Police Force. Immediate intervention is necessary to prevent further harm.
“On Friday, 29th August 2025, officers of this unit assaulted two young boys who had just completed their secondary education. Their only supposed “offense” was walking along the road while dressed neatly. The officers stopped them, demanded money, and when the boys explained they had none, they were brutally beaten. In the process, one of them lost his mother’s necklace and other valuable belongings. After subjecting them to this merciless treatment, the officers released them, realizing they had nothing to extort.”
The letter further added that one of the victims his currently hospitalised due to the alleged assault, calling for the sanction of the erring officers.
“I personally know these victims and can present them to the Nigeria Police Force whenever required. Regrettably, one of the boys has since fallen ill as a result of the assault, and his mother has been nursing him since that very day.
“I therefore humbly urge the Nigeria Police Force to investigate this matter thoroughly, take appropriate disciplinary action against the erring officers, and adopt preventive measures to safeguard the integrity of the institution while restoring public trust,” the letter further reads.
