Insecurity: FG’s failure necessitated Amotekun – Osun Speaker

By Joseph Akanbi

The Speaker of the State of Osun House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye has admitted that the failure of the Federal Government to address the rising spate of insecurity, necessitated the birth of the South West regional security operation codenamed Amotekun.

Owoeye made this known in his opening remarks at the public hearing session organized by the State House of Assembly for the consideration of the Osun Security Network Agency (Amotekun) bill.

The Speaker who expressed happiness at the level of Amotekun’s acceptability by the Yoruba race devoid of religious and political affiliation, said Section 24 of the constitution provides that ‘it shall be the duty of every citizen to make positive and useful contribution to the advancement, progress, and well-being of the community where he resides’.

He said ”At a time where the whole world is moving away from oil, we must begin plans to develop our next best thing, Agriculture. The index of agriculture being practiced in the Yoruba land is appalling compared to our brothers in the North, while we’re encouraging our youths to venture into farming, we as the leaders must create enabling environment to protect their lives and investment.”

”Considering the recent deaths from herders/farmers clashes, kidnapping and banditry, Amotekun is grossly important to complement our agricultural reforms, which may later be the mainstay of our economy.”

”Regrettably, the Federal Government security and architectural framework has failed in its entirety. The Amotekun bill, therefore, aims to fix the anomalies, failures in our security system, encourage Agriculture and make Osun a choice destination for investors.”

The Speaker hwoever said for Amotekun to be successful, it will require the support of all, young and old.
