Quite naturally, men, throughout the world and in all of human history, like good-looking women.
In fact, history is replete with many strange things which men have done for and or because of beautiful women.
Many would not forget in a hurry, the Shakespearean story of Anthony and Cleopatra. The biblical story of Samson and Delilah, also readily comes to mind.
Physical beauty is almost always a very critical factor which many men consider, of course, in addition to other qualities, as they choose girlfriends and or wives. Probably because women are not oblivious of this fact, they go the whole hog to look coquettish.
Given this fact, Nigerians, both men and women, with craze for fashion, fall headlong for anything in vogue. A large percentage of Nigerian women, including the underclass, wears makeups, some of them, in very disproportionate measures almost all the time!
Today, Makeup or Makeover, has become a thriving business for those who have chosen that path. It’s akin to the masseuses and masseurs commonly found in Asia and other parts of the world.
Noticeably, apart from facial padding, there’s also body padding of all kinds, done under different nomenclatures, all because of men. God save men!
Interestingly, if you remove makeups, most of the women you see on the streets or in the neighborhoods, can not stand close to most men in beauty contests!
Consider Bobrisky, for instance, the makeups which he wears, makes him to be more “beautiful” than some of these women. If Bobrisky, a man, who, ordinarily, is every inch ugly in his natural state, can be that “transformed”, then no man is ugly jare.
Some women, especially those accustomed to padding their faces with pancake and other accessories, should stop this showiness of “I’m pretty” which they often tout on social media platforms.
If you want to see how ugly most of these ladies are, visit them in the morning before they take their bath. You will be shocked to your marrow by what their real looks are!
Mind you, I am not against makeups. My position is: It should not be outlandish but rather moderate; and definitely not the one that will make them to become egungun (masquerade) overnight.
I have a beautiful wife who scarcely wears makeups but anytime, any day, she will trounce those makeups-made masquerades at any pageant meet! Yes, most of them on parade with ‘fine’ faces, are essentially bleary-eyed; they are largely beauty without brain.
These are the ones being used on a daily basis, to satisfy the lustful desires of men on the prowl.
To me, beauty without brain, is equal to shenanigans. But then, we have the likes of Bamidele Ademola-Olateju who are pride to womanhood . With or without makeups, women in her league, are beauty to behold, they are full of gumption, brain and brawn. They are unlike those engrossed in “self-coloration” (my coinage) whose thinking faculties have been eaten up by the pursuit of the mundane, pedestrian, and vainglory. The serious and brainy ones, always have their thinking caps on.
No doubt, there are many women doing great exploits and breaking grounds in different endeavours for the betterment of the larger society. And, I am not unaware of the fact that, quite a few of them, like and wear makeups. But, one thing with such women is that, just like anything and everything they do, their makeups “make sense”.
On the other hand, however, those who prefer frolicking and mendacious lifestyles, have always ended up being given Toilet Paper Treatment by men in the society.
Sadly, most of these ladies with their so-called beauty, can hardly engage you on contemporary issues; they hardly know what goes on in their environment; all they care to know is the latest in town or what’s in vogue – music, wears, styles, etc. If you conduct a simple test among some of them today, on what the name of the President of the Senate is, many of them will FAIL. Shockingly, some may even say, ‘sebi na Saraki’
As it affects our ladies, so also does it affect their male counterparts. A puerile and perfidious generation of sort is already on the stage! With the effect of drugs, most of them age faster than one would have expected. This is more than sad; it is tragic!
As for the ladies, most of them are already in the glabrescent zone as they now largely “protect” their heads with padded hairs. This is because, without this, most of them will not have toasters all their lives.
Get me right, I’m not a misogynist as my philogyny for them is constant. So,I am not against makeups, but I am against what will not make the wearer to be readily recognisable.
It is a sad fact in our today’s world, that some brides become hardly recognisable by their grooms due to heavy makeups which gives them bizarre looks on their wedding day.
Whether this is societal progress or retrogression, will obviously be an interesting discourse; and whether the development is culturally commendable or reprehensible, will equally provoke an intriguing debate.
One can only rest this matter on the fact that as far as fashion (including makeups) is concerned, it is a matter of “the more things change, the more they remain the same”. It is fleeting. Like someone once said, “This, too, will pass away”.
