A yet-to-be-identified girl said to be about seven years of age was burnt to death in a fire incident in the Itamerin area of Modakeke, Osun State.
The fire that started Thursday evening, it was learnt, raged for hours until the men of Osun State Fire Service extinguished it in the early hours of Friday.
The Administrative Officer of Osun State Fire Service, Fatai Aremu, in a chat with Saturday PUNCH, said, “Apart from several items that were burnt, our men also recovered the body of a seven-year-old girl, who must have been trapped in the inferno. We handed over the remains to the police.
“Six buildings were affected. Three of the buildings were completely razed down. The others were partially affected. It took our men hours to extinguish the fire. We had to refill our water storage four times. At around 12am, the fire was completely extinguished,” Aremu said.
Asked the cause of the inferno, Aremu said investigation was still on; adding that a shop filled with mattresses was in the building where the fire was first noticed.
He said the losses to the inferno could not be immediately ascertained but noted that many residential flats and shops were affected by the incident.
