The Speaker of the State of Osun House of Assembly has promised the passage of the Disability Bill under the 7th Assembly.
Owoeye in a telephone interview with our correspondent to celebrate today’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities, said the house is already working with critical stakeholders in developing a bill that will address all the needs of persons with Disabilities.
He further said “When the bill is passed into law, people living with disability will be safeguarded against any form of discrimination and also have equal access to a condusive socio-economic environment.”
Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari in January, 2019, signed the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act into law.
The act criminalises all forms of discrimination against people living with disabilities in the country and enforces their rights and privileges to education, healthcare, priority in accommodation and emergencies.
It also prohibits discrimination against the physically challenged in public transportation facilities, including seaports, railways and airports, and compels service providers to make adequate provisions for them.
The eventual passage of the Disability bill by the Osun State House of Assembly means the State will join other states like Lagos who passed their Disability Bill 9years ago and ensure equal rights are giving to persons living with disabilities.
