Xenophobic Attack: Aregbesola calls for caution from Nigerians

By Jamiu Ganiyu

Against the backdrop of reprisal attacks being carried out by some section of Nigerians on South African businesses in the country, the minister of interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has called on Nigerians to exercise caution, saying two wrongs never make a right.

The former Osun Governor while condemning the xenophobic attack on Nigerians living in South Africa in strong terms said the issue requires civility and maturity by concerned authorities.

He described the reprisal attacks being perpetrated by some section of Nigerians as counterproductive because all the South African business interests and investment in Nigeria are hugely owned by Nigerians as a result of indigenization law of the country.

He, however, urged Nigerians not to in any way seek to hurt their fellow citizens, he concluded.

In his words, the minister of interior said, “the current development in South Africa is unfortunate. Civility and maturity is however needed at this stage.”

“Reprisal attack is counterproductive because all South African interests and investments in Nigeria going by our indigenization law have huge Nigerian stakes and investments”

“We must not in any way seek to hurt ourselves.”
