Some youths drawn from parts of Osun State and trained by the United States Consulate Office, Lagos, have graduated after six months training in arts and crafts.
The youths, 25 of them, who were trained in wood carving, tie-dye, painting, among others, were trained at the Osogbo Artists’ Village between January and June 2019.
Speaking at the graduation of the students on Saturday at the Heritage Hotel, Osogbo, renowned Osogbo-based artist, Chief Jimoh Buraimo, who coordinated the training, said funds for the exercise was given to him by the United States Consulate Office, Lagos.
He said, “Out of several students that applied for the training, only 24 were found trainable. The training lasted six months. From the money released to us by the US Consulate, we paid the trainers and offset other expenses.”
The Director, Centre for Black Culture and International Understanding, Osogbo, Prof. ‘Siyan Oyeweso, called for ‘Adire Revolution’ in the six South-West states.
“If that is done, it will lead to prosperity for the region and everyone will be happy. Look at ex president Obasanjo, wherever you find him, he will be in adire. That is the kind of innovation we need to embrace to endear our culture to other people,” Oyeweso said.
