The Governor of Osun State, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, has reiterated the commitment of his administration to link Osun rural communities with the nearest market in order boost the state’s economy and for social development of the state through the provision of motorable roads for easy transport of goods and farm inputs.
The Governor of Osun made the remarks on Thursday at the official commissioning of Mechanically Maintained 228.5 Kilometre Rural Roads in the State at Akeredolu Town, Along Onikoko – Osi Sooko Road, Ile – Ife in Ife South Local Government Area of the state.
Oyetola described the project as a testimony to the achievement of one of his major electoral promises which centred on the provision of good road network irrespective of whether rural or urban.
While giving more insights into the other road construction of such being embarked upon by his administration, he stated that about 308-kilometer rural roads were currently being phased across the state, which was the second phase of the project implementation.
Governor Gboyega Oyetola, said Osun Road Access Mobilization Project, (RAMP), is involved mainly in construction and adaptation of roads with due consideration for road maintenance in order to make these roads to stand the test of time.
According to him, rural roads constituted about seventy-five percent of the total road networks in the state.
He, however, expressed his displeasure over the deplorable conditions of many of the rural roads.
The Osun helmsman then commended the O’RAMP for the strategy employed to provide a sustainable and effective approach in addressing the challenges of rural transport management.
In his words “Construction of well-designed roads coupled with a reliable maintenance option is the panacea to reviving transport infrastructure in the country”, he said.
Mr. Oyetola added that the state, Osun piloted the community-based road maintenance system in the country.
“It is our determination to link our rural communities with the nearest market, as another area to boost the economy and social development of our people”, he said.
This, according to him, was what his government had been doing across the state on an equitable basis.
Mr. Oyetola thereafter appealed to market men and women, farmers, timber contractors, and the entire community to reciprocate government gesture to put the roads to good use by avoiding road-damaging behaviors.
