Super Eagles record first victory at AFCON

By David Abiola

The Super Eagles of Nigeria under Coach Gernot Rohr has recorded a 1 nil victory against Burundi at the 2019 African Cup of Nations holding in Egypt.

Amissi almost gave Burundi the lead in the 14th minute while Mikel Obi of Nigeria wasted a golden opportunity to score in the 35th minute.

Odion Ighalo who came in the second half maximised the brilliant pass from Aina to score the world class goal that gave Nigeria the victory.

All efforts made by Burundi to score proved abortive as Nigeria’s defence was formidable.

The match which was played at the Alexandria Stadium had retired Nigerian footballer Kanu Nwankwo in attendance.

The Super Eagles who have not won an AFCON opening fixture in 13yrs since they beat Ghana 1-0 in Egypt 2006 broke that record tonight after defeating Burundi 1 goal to nil.

The Super Eagles lost 0-1 to Ivory Coast in Ghana 08, beaten by Egypt in Angola 2010, drew against Burkina Faso in South Africa 2013.
