Osun United on Saturday, 15th June, 2019 revived their hope of safety in the group B1 of the ongoing Nigeria National League (NNL) with an outstanding performance as they record their first victory against Giant Brillars of Enugu by three goals to nil in the week 7 encounter played at the Osogbo Township Stadium.
Gafar Olafimihan in 29th minute and Emmanuel Peters in 36th minute scored the two first half goals which put the Omoluabi Giants on the driving seat before substitute, Mehmud Akorede solo goal came in at stoppage time.
Osun United’s first goal came from the build up by Julius Adeyemi whose combination with Mojeed Abimbola and Emmanuel Peters produced a high class midfield performance as the United striker, Gafar Olafimihan met a cross by Emmanuel Peters with a powerful header nodded straight into the net of the “Nwa” Boys.
The Omoluabi Giants’ lanky striker, Victor Okeji who was operating from the left angle softly took the ball from David Mark and beat two Brillars defenders with his pace before attempting to provide assist for Julius Adeyemi. However, it was the on-rushing Emmanuel who fired the shot from 30meters which resulted into a goal that sent the spectators into a wild jubilation till the end of the first half.
The “Nwa Boys” at the beginning of the second half pushed forward and they could have recorded a goal too but the shot by Moses Akande hit the woodwork in the 47th minute. All other moves by Giant Brillars were thwarted by United’s defence guarded by Habila David, Daniel Edeh, Francis Odudu and David Mark.
Mehmud Akorede who was United’s only substitution the last goal to make the match end in three goals to nil.
Speaking on the performance, Osun United Coach Samson Unuanel described the triumph as “a victory for the management, for the supporters, the fans and the entire people of the state whose belief in the team hasn’t shaken, adding that the journey is still far”.
Osun United with 4 points will travel to Umuahia, Abia State next weekend where they will play against Abia Comets.
