An Osun State High Court, sitting in Osogbo on Thursday ordered the Nigeria Police to pay a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Alhaji Fatai Oyedele and two other persons a sum of N9 million as damages for infringing on their fundamental human rights.
The presiding judge, Justice A.O Ayoola also ordered the Police to publish apology in major newspapers.
Each of the three person is to be paid N3 million damages.
They were illegally detained on September 24th, 2018 after they reported the assault meted on them by some suspected political thugs at Alekuwodo area, Osogbo ahead of the rerun governorship poll held on 27th of September, 2018.
Responding to the judgement, the defendant counsel, Barrister Bukola Onifade commended the judiciary for standing firm to defend the right of the oppressed masses of the country.
He said with this judgement, the Nigeria Police Force will stop turning themselves to a tool for blackmail, torture and oppression in the hand of politicians.
