“Contributory Pension Scheme not living up to expectation” – TUC Chairman

By Mustapha Aleem

The Osun State Branch Chairman of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Comrade Adekola Adebowale, has decried that the Contributory Pension Scheme, which replaced the old pension plan, had not achieved the purpose for which it was established.

He said this in his address at the Annual Seminar of the Association themed: “Understanding the Contributory Pension Scheme; Panacea to a fulfilled life at retirement”, held at the Ataoja High School in Osogbo on Wednesday.

The Senior Civil Servant said the thought of life after retirement was an issue of concern to workers in Nigeria, especially those in the Public Service, while ascribing the effort to ameliorate the endemic situation to government.

According to him, “The government in its effort to improve the  workers’ living condition at retirement, introduced the contributory Pension scheme to replace the old scheme. However,  the scheme has not achieved the purpose for which it was established.”

He noted that the seminar theme was thought of in order to internalise civil servants with the trends of the contributory pension scheme.

“We saw the need to acquint our members with the developments in pensions’ acts, hence the need for the theme,” Adebowale said.

Lastly, the TUC Chairman commended the State Governor by paying full July Salary to workers of the State but also pleaded with him to fulfil his promise that the State Workers Leave Allowance for 2016 and Arrears of Salaries will be paid before the end of his administration.
