Osun 2018: Zamfara Gov to meet Aspirants as APC slates Primary for Friday

By Joseph Akanbi

The All Progressives Congress has announced Friday, 20th July, as the new date for its governorship primary in Osun State.

The governorship primary which was scheduled to hold today, 19th July, was postponed in a Press statement issued by the Director of Media and Strategy for the Osun State chapter of the party, Barr. Kunle Oyatomi, his statement however did not include a new date for the primary.

However, in another press statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Bolaji Abdullahi, He said “The All Progressives Congress (APC) Primaries to elect the Party’s candidate for the forthcoming Osun State Governorship election has been postponed from Thursday 19th July, 2018 to Friday 20th July, 2018.

“However, a meeting between the Primary Election Committee chaired by H.E. Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari, Governor of Zamafara State and stakeholders will hold at the Osun State capital, Oshogbo on Thursday.”

Recall that the All Progressives Congress has been engulfed in crisis over the adopted mode for the upcoming gubernatorial primaries.  The party began the week on Monday with the suspension of its Chairman, Prince Gboyega Famodun and Secretary, Alhaji Rasaq Salinsile. The duo were suspended by 11 of the constituted 17members of the State Working Committee for allegedly sidelining them in the decisions about the modus operandi of the party’s guber primary.

On Tuesday, 12 of the 17aspirants screened and cleared for the primary, rejected the use of direct primaries, the twelve aspirants who are of the West Senatorial District, a region strongly agitating for the zoning of the guber position said the direct primaries is skewed to favour a particular candidate.

On Wednesday, one of the aspirants, Barr. Kunle Rasheed Adegoke (KRAD), had addressed a press conference where he talked about the flaws and the illegality of the direct primaries at this present time.

Same Wednesday, the APC who had earlier released a statement asking members to prepare for the primaries on Thursday, later backtracked and postponed it.

However, it is still unclear if the issue of direct primaries and the controversies surrounding it will be addressed in today’s stakeholders meeting of all the aspirants with the Chairman of the APC primary committee, Governor Abdul Aziz Yari of Zamfara State.
