VoteNotFight holds media parley ahead of Osun Guber election

VoteNotFight, a social awareness campaign, has held a media parley as part of efforts towards ensuring a violence free Osun gubernatorial election.

 

The programme organized by Kimpact Development Initiative with support from the National Democratic Institute, 2Baba Foundation, USAID, UKAID, was held at the Aurora Events and Conference Centre, Osogbo.

 

The parley which had in attendance media personalities from the traditional and new media sectors, featured robust discussions from several experts and key players in the Nation’s electoral process.

 

Declaring the event open, the Executive Director of KDI, Bukola Idowu, informed the participants of the vision and mission statement of the campaign which is to, drastically reduce the violence during our elections as well as promote youth inclusion in governance.

 

In his own remarks, Bem Aga, the programme Manager of the National Democratic Institute, explained the procedures and overview of Nigeria’s electoral legal frame work. He said the frame work will assist participants understand and utilize information on such issues as electoral offences, qualification to vote, display of voters register, over voting, responsibility of electoral stakeholders, transfer of registered voters, postponement of election and announcement of election results.

 

The representative of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ven. Akin Ojewande, thanked the media in Osun State for their support in promoting the efforts and activities of the agency. He also called for their support once more in ensuring a free, fair and credible Osun Governorship election. He later reminded them of the need to have their facts verified before publication so as to avoid overheating the polity with fake and unverified news.

Lastly, the event rounded off with pledges from media personalities present and an induction ceremony as a VoteNotFight ambassador for the upcoming elections.
