With less than three months to the Osun 2018 Governorship election, our independent poll has shown that the good people of Osun State prefer someone from the West Senatorial District as a replacement for the outgoing Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.
An independent opinion poll conducted by our platform shows that 66% of the total voters believes that the next Governor, for equity and fairness, should be from the West Senatorial District, while the remaining 34% believes it should be based on merit.
One of the West proponents, Okunade Abdulquadri, said apart from equity and fairness, the West Senatorial District also has the most competent candidates than any other zone.
Also, Ayo Akanbi, said it is in the best interest of his party, the All Progressives Congress, to pick its candidate from the west, if it is to remain in power beyond 2018.
However, arguing for merit, Olatoke Olaniyan said “Governance should not be on turn-by-turn basis but on quality representation”
In his own remarks, Daodu Adebayo said “A country which pitches fairness and equity over merit is expecting doomsday’’
A deep insight into the activities of the two major political parties in Osun State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), shows that even though it looks definite that the PDP will pick its candidate from the West, it is not Uhuru yet in APC. The governorship ambition of the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, is still ruffling major feathers within the APC camp.
The PDP on the other hand, has its major contenders from the West Senatorial District, they include Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi, Senator Ademola Adeleke, Engr. Fatai Akinbade, Rt. Hon. Adejare Bello, Dr. Lere Oyewumi and Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi. While it is safe to assume that one of these lots will pick the much coveted PDP guber ticket, politics has shown that it is not over until it is indeed over.
