The Osun State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Dr Ajibola Basiru has called for the creation of State to curb incessant crime in Nigeria.
Dr. Basiru made this call while delivering his address at a special Valedictory Court Session in Honour of Late Justice Francis Adeleke Adedeji (retired) at the High Court Complex, Osogbo.
The Attorney General said, ” State police in the present day society of our is but a necessity and more importantly in the face of incessant attack and threatened Violence and heinous crimes in many parts of the country”.
It is often said that crime is local and may require a local response in the prevention and investigation of such crimes.
Dr. Basiru quoted section of the constitution section 14(2)(b) places on every government the responsibility of the security and welfare of the people, inclusive of the State Government while the prosecuting powers is vested by virtue of section 211 in the State through the office of the Attorney General of the State and yet the State does not even have policing power.
He also mentioned that the State constitutionally saddled with the responsibility of the Security and welfare of the people do not have Control over apparatus of police.
Dr. Basiru added that Delay in criminal prosecutions sometimes based on the indiscriminate transfer of investigative police Officers officers out of the State without recourse to the prosecuting authority of the State saddled with the responsibility to prosecute offences.
