A situation where someone practically takes over another persons finances and makes the latter depend on the former is called Economic Abuse. Economic abuse is also known as financial abuse only that the use of economic abuse is more encompassing because it includes the control of someone’s present or future earning potential, in some cases preventing them from obtaining a job or education, in short exploiting economic resources of the victim.
Economic abuse is a form of domestic violence that happens when the financial power of a person has been trampled upon by another, but attention is not really paid to this form of abuse because it doesn’t surface as one. Notwithstanding it is a domestic violence that has eaten deep into various sectors, and even homes in our society. This form of domestic violence found it abode within the government sectors especially in countries such as Nigeria, a country where people work the whole month only to beg for their salary at the end, this happens often and sometimes leads to protest or strike in some cases.
Then to the private sector, economic abuse is a constant phenomenon, literally, it seems to be one of their growth factor. This abuse needs to be taken care of because it has made a lot of individuals to be financially handicapped. Economic abuse is often used as a control mechanism as part of a larger pattern of domestic violence which may include verbal, emotional, physical and sexual abuse. Family members engaged in financial abuse especially from elderly ones, they do this because they feel justified; thus economic abuse really needs to be guide against even from the grass root, the family before the wider society. It is such a mentality that involves exploiting others and as such should not be condoned.
