By Awolusi Similola

The Federal Road Safety Commission which was established on the 18th of February 1988 under the administration of General Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babangida, celebrates its 30th anniversary.

The Osun Sector command decided to celebrate this anniversary today,  the 16th of February 2018 , which serves as a” prelude to the celebration on the 18th of February this year “. A rally was conducted which stared from Fakunle through to Olaiya and Oke-fia axis, all in a bid to create awareness to the people  to continually take life as important as it is.

The Sector Commander Anthony Oko, comments on the achievements of the FRSC stating that before the inception of FRSC,  traffic crashes were on a rise in Nigeria which made the United Nations tag Nigeria as the 2nd most dangerous country to drive in. He also narrated that after the Civil War,  with the oil boom and the influx of resources, people started buying vehicles and the roads became extremely busy. Also, the roads were narrow and there were no improvements on infrastructures leading to so many crashes. All of these therefore led to the introduction of the FRSC.

Furthermore, he stated that with the introduction of FRSC,  frameworks have been put in place and solutions have been introduced concerning the issue of Road Traffic. The rally was therefore to create consciousness in the people to various areas such as traffic regulations, driver’s license, number plates.

He also stated that though Nigerians are attentive to the regulations, “there are pockets of people who are now going against the policies”. Although, going against the stipulated rules brings about various consequences.

Lastly, he expressed his joy saying ” 30 years isn’t 30 days” and admonished Nigerians not to drive and drink, not to speed,  always obtain their driver’s license and always go to certified driving schools. He also promised that the Road Safety would not relent but continue with ” greater vigour” and continue with their quick response to various incidents that may arise.
