Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Sulaimon Lasun Yussuff has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress to join hands with national Assembly in the amendment of the local government law.
He stated that the power to do that lies with the States Assembly because without their support what both the two chambers are doing will be a nullity.
So in doing so, the Deputy Speaker was of the view that the NLC can help by going round the local government area councils and states talk to them on the importance of local government autonomy.
He stated this at the public hearing organised by the Special Ad hoc committee on the review of the 1999 constitution.
He maintained that the amendment is very important but that National Assembly can not do it alone without the support of the States Assembly lawmakers.
We believe that NLC could help in this direction and that is why we are appealing to the to join the National Assembly in its efforts at given autonomy to the local government.
