The Magistrates’ Association of Nigeria, Osun State branch had bewail threat to the magisterial bench of sitting over the application filed by Oba Kadiri Olatunde against the Iwo monarch, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale and Commissioner of Police, Osun state.
It was learnt through a document made available to our correspondent on Thursday in Osogbo, Osun-State.
The letter stated the evolution of the case and unveil occasion of threat activities on applicant counsel, Soji Oyetayo, Iwo Magistrate, Mrs. F.I Omisade and Osogbo Magistrate, Mr. Olushola Aluko.
The document which was addressed to the chief Judge of Osun-State, Justice Adepele Ojo read in part ” the present trend is setting a very bad precedent against the Magisterial bench and by extension to the whole judiciary”
“And the lives and integrity of magistrates are at stake and would be jeopardized if unchecked by decisive responses to this affront, unprecedent attacks on the office and person of Magistrates and their family members may become an order of the day”
“We therefore humbly seek your lordship’s attention, protection and response in following ways: (a) an urgent directive to the Commissioner of Police to arrest and present for prosecution the Oluwo of Iwo (b) an urgent order directing the Commissioner of Police to provide each Magistrate with armed personal orderlies as done in other jurisdiction”
The document indict the monarch (Oluwo) of stern refusal to appear before the magistrate for four consecutive occasions as ordered by the magistrate.
It was also stated that the monarch is using various media for aspersion on the character and integrity of the magistrate.
The association submitted on the document that”threat to the security of magistrates as exemplified in the events in Iwo and Osogbo, we consider our lives unsafe and may be unable to continue sitting in our various stations, which may affect us entertaining any new charge from office of the Commissioner of Police until the Commissioner of Police had complied with your lordship’s directives”.
