The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Osun State chapter on Wednesday installed the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, as its patron.
At the presentation of the certificate of installation at Oduduwa House in Ile-Ife, the Chairman of the chapter, Adeyemi Aboderin, said the Ooni’s choice was in recognition of his advocacy for peace and national unity.
Aboderin also said that the honour was bestowed on the Ooni for his passion for sports and investment in youth empowerment, adding the association shared in his noble objectives.
In his acceptance speech, the Ooni said that he was impressed with the sterling qualities of the new SWAN executives in the state.
According to the royal father, the media has a “priceless” role in improving the situation of the society in addition to promoting sports development.
He, therefore, advised the association to give local sports and events more priority in its reportage as a matter of national pride and patriotism.
In his remarks, the National President of SWAN, Honour Sirawoo, expressed the association’s delight to have the Ooni as the royal patron of the association in the state.
Sirawoo said that SWAN is committed to sports development and willing to encourage diversification of the country’s economy through sports.
He further said that the association identified itself with the vision of the Ooni to promote local sports for the
purpose making them provide an alternative to oil revenue generation.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of a plaque and medal by the national president and state chairman of SWAN to the Ooni as the association’s state patron.
