Osun State Governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola has advised fresh graduates from Osun State Polytechnic,Iree to be enterprising rather than seeking white collar jobs, given the harsh economic situation in the country.
The governor who was represented by his deputy, Mrs Titi-Laoye Tomori said this during the combined 5th convocation ceremonies of Osun State Polytechnic, (OSPOLY) Iree.
He reminded the graduands of the economic situation in the country occasioned by the drop in oil price and how it has affected all tiers of government and the public sector.
According to him, “many of you are looking to get a job in the professions and build a career on it. This may turn out to be disappointing because jobs are few and far in between for the army of graduates who are fighting over the available ones”.
“Public sector jobs are not just unavailable. It is for the reason of the political consequences that many states and the Federal Government would not want to right-size their workforce in order to cope with huge wage bills”, he said.
The governor lamented that the situation was not better at the private sector since they mostly rely on government patronage. He said the private sector was also lapsing into spasms.
“I encourage you to be creative and enterprising. You are all aware of the success story of Bill Gates, the co-founder and chairman of Microsoft Corporation who was in such a hurry, being driven by the knowledge that computer is the future, could not wait to complete his degree at Harvard University. You are fortunate to have completed your course and have obtained your certificate. You have to challenge yourselves to be able to survive this season and indeed at all times”.
The governor reiterated the need for schools to equip their students with marketable skills and not just issue them with bland certificates. He urged the graduands whose courses have already equipped them with life sustaining skills to tap the available opportunities to become successful.
The Rector of the polytechnic, Dr Jacob Agbola commended the state governor for proper funding of the institution. He said all the programmes of the polytechnic enjoyed full accreditation status.
He urged the state governor to approve the recruitment of staff for the polytechnic. He also urged the governor to assist the institution with provision of buses to ease the transportation of students and staff of the polytechnic.
