The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Osun on Friday inaugurated its “ember’ months’ campaign and warned motorists to drive carefully to be alive.
The campaign kicked off at Oke-Ijetu Motor Park, Ilesa-Garage, Osogbo, with the theme “Crash the crashes, speed kills’’.
The sector commander, Umar Ibrahim, told journalists that the negative attitudes of road users were often responsible for the increase in road crashes during the “ember’’ months.
According to Ibrahim, the last four months of the year, regarded as the`ember’ months, are usually characterised by increased social and economic activities.
He said crashes, injuries and fatalities used to have serious impact on our economy as many children become orphans while many adults become widows and widowers.
“The command is determined to crash the crashes in order to have crash free ember months,’’ Ibrahim said.
He said the command would operate on the five major casualty factors of the Road Traffic Crashes (RTC).
According to him, this is aimed at domesticating the UN recommendations on fatality reduction from 161 deaths per 10,000 vehicles to two deaths per 10,000 vehicles that may be involved in accidents.
He said the command was carrying along all major stakeholders in its strategic efforts to reduce crashes on the major roads.
The sector commander also cautioned drivers against speeding, overloading, dangerous driving, wrongful over taking and route violation.
Ibrahim called on the residents of the state to continuously cooperate with the commission in its efforts to ensure safest society and total security of lives and property on the roads.
