Osun State Government has intensified efforts to stop open defecation so as to ensure proper hygiene and good health of the people of the state.
The state government was collaborating with the United Nation Children Fund (UNICEF) and the Europea Union-Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Reform Programme (EU-WSSSRP-II) to sensitize the residents of Osun to desist from open defecation because of its hazards.
The Project Coordinator, Water Resources, Rural Development and Community Affairs in Osun State, Engr Adelere Oriolowo, on Monday told Daily Trust that the state government, EU-WSSSRP-II and UNICEF collaborated to celebrate “2016 World Toilet Day” because of the urgent need to stop open defecation in the state.
According to him, “Sanitation is a global development priority. Toilets play a crucial role in promoting good health and prevention of diseases as well as ensuring the safety and dignity of the people, particularly women and children.”
Oriolowo said the State Task Group on Sanitation (STGS) that was set up by the Rural Water and Environmental Sanitation Agency (RUWESA) was keenly monitoring communities where open defecation was rampant in a bid to stem the tide.
