A 29-year-old man, Fatai Aliyu, was on Monday sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by an Osogbo Magistrates Court in Osun for stealing 10 bowls of rice and four bottles of wine.
The convict pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of theft and break-in when he appeared before Magistrate Olusola Aluko.
Aluko ordered the convict to be kept in Ilesa Prison to serve his jail term. Earlier, the prosecutor, SP Mireti Wilson, had told the court that Aliyu committed the offences on Oct. 29, at about 2a.m., at Oke-Ayepe area of Osogbo.
Wilson said Aliyu broke into the shop of one Mrs Okeola Comfort where he carted away 10 bowls of rice and four bottles of wine. He said Aliyu was apprehended by the vigilante and handed him over to the police.
The offences contravened Sections 414 and 383 and are punishable under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34, Vol.11, Laws of Osun, 2003. The counsel to Aliyu , Mr Seye Oluyobi, prayed the magistrate to temper justice with mercy in the delivery of his judgment.
