The vice chancellor of Bowen University, Iwo, Prof Matthews Ojo, has disclosed that the university would be inducting about 23 medical graduates as first set of medics to be produced by the institution since establishment.
Prof Matthews, who disclosed this at the convocation press briefing of the 11th convocation ceremony held at the institution on Friday , also said the institution would be graduating about 63 first class students.
According to him, out of the over 1,000 graduates the institution will be producing from six faculties, 63 of them scooped first class honours, which is an improvement to what is obtained from the previous 59 and 49 for 2003 and 2005 respectively. The school will also admit 37 post graduate students, one of whom is a Doctor of Philosophy graduate, to the higher degrees.
37 graduands from the College of Health Sciences; 62 graduands from Agriculture; 133 graduands from Humanities; 354 graduands from Science and education and 407 graduands from Social and Management Science make up the 993 statistics of students by class of the degree.
He added that as part of the Corporate Social Responsibility of the institution, they have partnered with the Oluwo of Iwo Empire, Oba Adbulrasheed Akanbi, on the rehabilitation of the road linking Iwo, Ede and Osogbo among other things.
“The university has partnered the Oluwo of Iwo in the areas of rehabilitating the bad roads on the Iwo, Ede and Osogbo axis so as yo make it become motorable. We are also sponsoring the Iwo day, the Olupona day and others. We also sprouted coverts in some of the communities around us,” he said.
He however commended the Federal Government for the recent license it has given to 10 private Universities in the country, describing it as a measure towards creating more access to University education in the country.
He said the capacities of the institutions in existence could not cater for the demands if over one billion admission seekers, emphasizing it was a right step in the right direction.
