A former Secretary to the Osun State Government, Alhaji Fatai Akinbade, has said severe hunger being experienced by many Nigerians was caused by economic recession.
Akinbade said this in a lecture he delivered at the investiture of Anthony Obiyemi as the 11th president of the Osogbo Living Spring Lions Club.
Akinbade, who was represented at the ceremony by his media aide, Mr. Kayode Oladeji, said the number of people suffering severe hunger was daily on the increase because of the effect of the economic recession.
The former SSG said there was a wide gap between the few wealthy Nigerians and the large majority of the masses, who were living in abject poverty.
He urged members of the club and other wealthy Nigerians to do more to assist the needy.
Akinbade said, “There is much pain in the land occasioned by hunger, lack of employment, lack of amenities that give life minimum comfort and the likes.
“My brothers and sisters, poverty is only good in poems, it is better imagined than experienced. You don’t seem to appreciate silence until your neighbour’s generator is switched off.”
Akinbade, who contested the 2014 governorship election in Osun State on the platform of the Labour Party, said government alone could not solve all the problems confronting Nigerians.
He urged Nigerians to make it a habit to render help to other people, saying such help did not need to be in millions.
