The Osun State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Mr. Najeem Salaam, has called for unity among different stakeholders for the protection of the girl child in the country.
In a statement signed by the Chairman, House Committee on Information and Strategy, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child celebrated on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, the parliament said efforts must be intensified to put a stop to the maltreatment of the girl child in the country.
It added that every girl child deserves balanced nutrition, affection, health care and quality education.
Stating the need for collaboration among the stakeholders, including the Ministry of Women Affairs, non-governmental organisations and faith-based community organisations, the Assembly said the welfare of the girl child should not be left to NGOs alone, but all residents in the community.
It also called for proper documentation of cases and enforcement of existing laws on offenders to serve as deterrent to others.
The parliament further advocated the need for leaders of thought to provide springboard for affirmative action against individuals or group who abuse children either by denying them education, inflicting assault on them physically, engaging them in.
The House said it was in the interest of the need to protect the girl child from street hawking, trafficking and sexual abuse that the Osun State Girl Child Marriage (Prohibition) Law, 2004 and the Child Rights Law, 2007 were passed.
