Oluwo of Iwo in Osun State, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale, Telu I, has lamented the harsh treatment usually melted out to ex-convicts by the society, saying as long as society refuses to forgive anyone that has served prison terms; their successful re-integration would continue to be impossible.
This is just as the officer in charge, Ilesa Prison, in Osun State, deputy comptroller, DC Ope Fanmikun, said out of the 582 inmates presently in his custody, 454 are awaiting trial.
Oba Akanbi stated this while addressing inmates and officials of the Nigerian Prison Service, NPS, Ilesa, during a visit.
He disclose that his mission was to have first-hand experience of the goings on behind the wall of prison and see areas he could intervene, urging inmates not to see their status as
the end of life, but ensure they turn a new leaf and be close to God.
The monarch who frowned at a situation whereby inmates spend several years in prison awaiting conclusion of their trials, also paid fine of those with mild fines.
