Police quiz college staff over kidnap allegation

Eight workers of the Osun State College of Education, Ila-Orangun Osun State, have been quizzed at the headquarters of the Osun State Police Command in Osogbo, over an allegation that they planned to kidnap the Registrar of the college, Mr Aderiola Adeoti.

The police acted on a petition that was said to have been written and signed by Adeoti, in which he allegedly accused leaders of staff unions in the college of plotting to kidnap him and cause chaos in the college and Ila community.

It was gathered that the State Investigation Bureau (SIB) of Osun State Police Command invited the leaders of Academic Staff Union, Non-Academic Staff Union and the Senior Staff Union to the police headquarters in Osogbo and quizzed them over the allegations by the petitioner.

However, the matter took another dimension when the Registrar denied knowledge of the petition, saying that his signature was forged.

Adeoti was said to have written a disclaimer and submitted it to the police, dissociating himself from the contents of the said petition.

The Registrar was sighted at the police headquarters in Osogbo in company of his wife, when he submitted the disclaimer and urged the police to disregard the petition.

The Registrar, in his letter urged the police to identify the impersonator that wrote the petition and forged his signature and prosecute such individual for misleading the police.

The Chairman of Ila chapter of the College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Mr Segun Onifade and the Chairman of Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education in Nigeria, (SSUCEN) Ila chapter, Mr Akintunde Ojo, accused the Provost of the college, Professor Isaac Oyewole, of being behind the petition and wondered why he decided to impersonate the Registrar.

They said, “it is necessary for the police to unveil the actual person behind the petition in the interest of justice”.

“We observed that even though the Registrar was said to have written the petition, the case file showed that the Provost was the complainant and the Provost mobile number was written under the name and signature of the Registrar.

“We also realised that each time the Investigating Police Officers (IPO) called the Registrar (as the complainant) to get clarifications, the Provost, Professor Isaac Oyewole, was the one who took the calls. This is absurd and barbaric, given the nature of the allegation involved”, they said.

Speaking on the development, the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mr Femi Oyeleye, said the matter was reported and that the union leaders mentioned in the petition were quizzed and released.

He added that the matter was under investigation.
