The Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Representative, Hon Lasun Yussuff, has lamented that the overdependence of Nigerians on the government was the major reason why the country’s economy was limping.
In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, Wole Oladimeji, Hon Lasun said until the people woke up to their senses that it is no longer business as usual, things might not augur good for the country.
He also admonished Nigerians to reorientate their perception of governance, emphasising that it was important for all and sundary to take a different look at those at the helms of powers.
The statement read in part, “It is true that some leaders are bad but the major problem confronting the nation is the way people perceive governance, they think that government should do everything for them, whereas, in the real sense of it, people are suppose to be driving the economy of the country.
“Over dependence of the people on the government is what is affecting our economy, until people wake up from their slumber and realise that it is not business as usual, the situation will remain and this will not augur good for everybody.
“People run after politicians for the immediate gains even when they organised skill acquisition programme and try to empower them, they prefer to sell off the equipment given to them for a token.”
He tasked Nigerians to prioritise the acquisition of lucrative skills and self development before eyeing politics. He said those without something good to fall back on aside politics often suffered after quitting politics.
He added that self development was key to the nation’s growth, emphasising that I’ll gotten wealth from politcs could easily be traced and recovered from culpable politicians.
But he lauded the feat of Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who he described as an elder statesman who had worked well enough before joining politics.
“That is why it would be difficult for him to go down any time he quits politics, he has stable source of income, he never depend on politics for survival unlike some politicians that goes down immediately they are no longer in politics or power,” he said.
