A Regional Director of the United Bank for Africa Plc, UBA, Mr Babajide Bewaji, has advised medical doctors in Osun state to look beyond serving in a private organization for their entire life.
He said doctors should spend at most 15 years under their employer, saying every employer did not plan for the growth of their employees.
He gave the admonition at the inauguration of the Nigeria Medical Association’s state officers and 20million naira launching of the NMA house in Osun State on Thursday.
In his lecture titled, ‘Beyond Medicine’, the banker also charged that people should endeavour saving at least 30 percent of their income to enable them create a job of their own.
He said, “Your employer will determine when you wake up, when you sleep, where you leave and how you think. You will always be at the mercy of your employer. They determine your salary, increase and you always live with the fear of losing your job.”
The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdul Rasheed Akanbi, The Chief of Staff to the Osun State Government, Chief Gboyega Oyetola, The Health Committee Chairman of the Ekiti State House of Assembly’s, Dr SIB Omotosho, were among the dignitaries present at the event.
In his own address, Omotosho, admonished the newly inaugurated NMA officers not to limit themselves to the medical responsibilities beheld on them. He said it’s not a sin if doctors participated in community and societal administration.
According to him, on the average, medical doctors are very brilliant and this fact does not translate into you not chasing wisdom. Wisdom is not by brilliance, it is not by age or position in the society.
Also, the Chief of Staff said that the health sector in Osun state, which is the cardinal of this administration’s plan, had received a lot of money from the state government.
He added that, all the state owned hospitals were given new equipments and upgraded as a way of upscaling the health sector in the state.
One of the guest speakers, Dr Anthony Adenekan, a Consultant Anaesthetist, said cardiac arrest, which is one of the commonest source of death was simple to avert if prompt cardiovascular resuscitation and defibrillation was carried out on the victim.
He said, “When people see someone lying unconscious they think it is death, many don’t know that such a person’s life could be saved by a non medic like you. they are very simple things.
“When you come across such, just ask the person lying some questions pertaining to his life and if he or she can’t respond, place the heels of your hand on the center of the chest and the other one on it then press as fast as possible for 30 times within 15 seconds to two breaths for there is only 4-5 minutes of survival chance for the patient. You repeat this process up to five times before calling for help. With this you might save a life and don’t celebrate shouting ‘o ti ku o’ when you see people in an unconscious state.”
He added that, several factors were responsible for cardiac arrest, ranging from diabetes, hypertension, drug overdose and among others.
