On resumption next Tuesday, the Senate will summon the heads of Federal Government agencies established to respond to emergency situations to state their readiness in the event of a landslide in the country.
Topmost on the list of the agencies is the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) established to manage disasters in the country.Residents of Saki in Oke Ogun area of Oyo State recently experienced vibrations at Medinat, Veterinary and Ogbooro settlements. The most recent vibration was in Koi community in southern part of Kaduna State.
It has been observed that a tremor can be violent enough to toss people around and destroy whole cities.Geophysical studies have revealed that a fault zone that connects with Atlantic fracture system exists along Ifewara in Osun State and Zungeru in Niger State.
Senate President Bukola Saraki who gave a hint of the plan to summon the agencies yesterday in an interview with reporters in Ilorin, Kwara State, said the nation could not afford to be caught napping after a series of warnings of a likely tremor.
“I have read about it too, I mean the threats of a likely tremor in some parts of Nigeria. I even read about the last Sunday’s tremors in some parts of Kaduna State.“We need to act swiftly on this. When the Senate resumes, we will meet and find out the level of the threats to our national existence. Then NEMA will be invited to tell us their levels of preparedness for the emergencies. Nobody prays for it but we will not wait until the unexpected occurs,” Saraki said.
Meanwhile, the Kaduna State government has pledged to assist the victims of the earth tremor that rocked the Koi community. Experts from overseas will investigate and find a lasting solution to the incident that affected more than 20 houses.

While addressing the people, Batex said the government was seriously disturbed by the incident and would deploy experts to unravel the cause with a view to finding a lasting solution to the phenomenon.
He urged the youths in the area to be law-abiding and promised that the victims whose houses were affected would be assisted to effect repairs. An eyewitness said: “People are still running away from the town. Up till this morning, a lot of people came with vehicles to evacuate their families. People are jittery, they cannot sleep again at night and many had nightmares.
