Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, has urged Nigerian journalists to be more patriotic while discharging their duties by latching on issues that would better the lives of the masses.
He gave the admonition at the 25th anniversary of Osun state organised by the correspondents chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists in Osun state on Wednesday.
The monarch also charged that, culture and tradition should not be subjected to religion, hammering that religion only formed the believe of mankind and had nothing to do with our ways of living.
According to him, subjecting our culture and tradition to religion, would continue to compound the problems we have been having in this country.
“Be concerned more about issues that would better the lives of Nigerians. Important issues of masses’ interest are often swept to a column on the newspaper page. This is not good enough and we should not because we were not paid, decide to dishonour essential issues.”
He also harped on the benefits embedded in tourist sites within the shores of the country, saying the country wouldn’t need foreign visitors if a chunk of its population patronised the nature settlements in the country.
He said if Osun Osogbo was free of consciousness of belonging to traditional adherents, millions of people would visit.
But, he said the government were not helping the situation as the responsibility of overseeing the sites was majorly left in the hands of the traditionalist, making it convenient for other religions devotees to shy away.
